A little bit more text with the images I finally managed to post today. It has been so hectic since I arrived here that I didn t have the chance to up-date my blog. Ladriella is going on full speed again with a lot of themed activities as food pyramid, health, family and of course x-mas. They have being asking me every day for the last weeks when `santa s` coming and due to our activity this saturday he will be coming real soon now. Saturday we had a shopping spree for no less then 88 pairs of shoe. Picking them out, negociating and checking sizes en cleaness (found shoes with egg on them,...) took no less then 4 hours and 4 people. We will be giving them out this tuesday so if we need to exchange them we have time wednesday. I hope this will all be possible in the x-mas spirit because if have had mothers and kids from all over requesting me for shoes this week. The reason this shoe initiave is possible is because of the generous donation of all the people for my nephew Simon who was born last week. Thanks to them (and of course simon and his parents) this is all achievable.
It is great to have a new life in the family after my bomma past away a few weeks ago.
Things have been very lively in Huancayo since I have two danish (Marie and Liene) and a canadian (Jilian) roomies. We saw all the corners of Huancayo this weekend walking to a beautifull mini theatre on friday, shopping saturday (after the 88 pairs I even managed to try on a pair myself which I will probably by -yes I know I can t believe it myself) and beauty treatment today. My juice girl -Sanaida- turns out to be beauty specialist -in wording- and gave me and Maire a hair cut. I also got some make up and am even thinking of getting my nails done. Unbelievable how may varieties you have for this. In exchange I have take her to lunch and cine.
The cine just opened her a few weeks and the biggest attraction are actually the -roltrap- as
a lot of people haven t experienced this yet and are scared of this (this has caused lines)
I will normally take some kids of Ladriella to the cine this week.It is really percular the clash between the traditional - tradional markets, people selling on the streets just 10 meters further- and things like plaza veal (mega market), the cine and fast foods like pizza hut opening soon. All this has only started in a half years time and I am curious to see how it will evolve. There is also a mall -peruviaans wijnegem- that should open next year.
Tomorrow two other volunteers should come to join us for the x-mas celebration. We will probably be 6 volunteers and 10 peruviaans for a lot of turkey, rice and appelmoes.
Tomorrow we will be baking `speculaas` with the children of ladriella. I am curious to see how much will eventually end up in the oven instead of there face and the ground.
The last weekend of the year will be spent in the jungle with the danish girl.

Hellowa,

I still can t believe it but in a few hours I will be on a bus heading for Lima where I will pick-up my travel partner Karel. We will be traveling for a month oa be discovering following things, pisco, nasca, ica, cuco with inca trail, la paz in bolivia, arequipa,... This planning is very flexible so maybe in the end in will be full of surprises.
So I said goodbye to mu mudmonsters with a musical pack fiesta, to Lizette and her dog -for the latter I am very pleased- you should have seen me wednesday, he was blocking the entrance of their house so I was yelling her from the street-rocks in my hand, our neighbourhood taxi driver, the owner of the discotheek and last but not least, Ryan and Jodie who where my roomies for a week. I will be back in a month to celebrate X-mas at ladriella.
I need to take my bus but will keep you informed.

Lizet came to me in Ladriella for help as she landed up in Huancayo with false promises and now is struggling to survive with her 5 kids. Her husband has a back condition and can't do any heavy labour, so there aren't many jobs for him. I am trying to support the family to get out of this bad situation. We bought the baking car you can see on the picture so she can start earning money and build a new future.

It turns out that I live in the region with the most fiestas. The last weeks only we have bumped into three. There was the San Fransisco celebration with parades,dances and kermis, the mega parade in the main street of the city on sunday and the yesterday we celebrated the 48 existence
of Chupuro a small town a half an hour away. Every celebration is marked by its own tradition, from very bright colored customs to more ritual outfits with mud and hay everywhere -voor een goede oogst pakt-. They also love dancing and most of the parades and festivals have big bands accompany them. -saxes, trumpets, family of the harp and the strangest blowing instruments- We landed up in Chupuro yesterday as Liz works their in a medical center and was asked to judge in a beauty contest. Yeppa Miss Chupuro 2008 was crowned yesterday. It was really funny, most of them were only 15 and were copy catting moves they had seen on tv.-spontaniteit troef- It was a bit strange seeing this kind of event as I am used on daily base to see kids who have become one with sand. Although, the water taps are fixed now so it is easier to motivate them to wash their hands for the moment. We also have a toothbrush lesson today to stimulate the use of this.
After we got the chance to eat cebiche this weekend -raw fish marinated in spicy lemon sauce=delicious- we discovered another local speciality yesterday, hot pisco -which the lady thought we absolutely needed to buy by the bottle. Pretty yummy but Pisco Sour is still my number one.
Sunday we had a pretty big adventure with destination 5000 meters, a glacier. It started of with a bag of coca leaves -for hight and strenght mar eigenlijk nt te fretten-, a guide with a rope and a bottle of sugar cane spirit, an offer for the gods, fog everywhere and a storm above our head. It was a thrilling experience with a lot of beautiful sights. In the end we were surrounded by a white carpet and icy "kraters". We suggested it was better to go back as the Peruvian security standards -the rope- didn't seem washed up against the elements of nature.
(The picture you see us jumping is the moment before we turned back. As you see you can't see anything execpt white. When asking our guide if it wasn't a good idea to walk back he sad yes-yes it is very dangerous here :-). I think he was just no longer able to think as he wasn't wearing a proper jacket nor gloves. He was most frozen of us all in the end) I was glad I had chosen the fish as lunch as you could see the carcas of the sheep hanging outside. -it should be really, really fresh-
Although I have seen a lot of carcasses the last weeks as Lizet is selling cow hart, a local speciality. The peruvian's tend to use everything of the animal;hart, intestins, heads, feet,... You name a part they name a dish.
The girl you can see on the picture is Liz, she is from Australia and is staying for 2 months.
Also new are Saab and her son , English indiërs, who are joining us for two weeks. So wednesday no chicken but a vegetarian indische dinner, wat een luxe!

As the Finish girls were sick last sunday I decided to go for a hike to toro-toro. What was supposed to be a good walk turned out to be a firm hike as I followed the wrong people and landed up way to high. Ok, I got a splendid view, pity that my young companions -and of course their dogs- only caught up with me when I was actually on track. This was after a steep way done hill, well at least it was adventurous and probably some people had a good laugh seeing this gringa coming down like that.

Last saturday we went to the wanka park were a mini guide told us all about the lives of a lot of well-known (for them) musicians and dirigenten.
I didn't catch all of it but there seemed to be a lot of womenasers and they liked -een glaasje meer-.It was the place to be for married couples who went in a lovely tower where normally children can acces.
The park was beautifull and the picuters give a great idea of what people -especially for the traditional women- or still dressed like.
And they love their hats and I love that!
The band absolutely wanted to be on the pciture with us. They were nice guys -told us the difference between traditional and "american" marriage, typical foods,...- killing some time before they needed to play at a marriage. I gave them my mail and hope they need to play in Huancayo because it would be a great chance to here so traditional music. (they were from different parts of the country)

The last two weeks I have been joining Salla and Suvi to the orphanage Coto-Coto in the morning. We have mainly been helping with the babies as you can see on the pictures. For the moment they are between 3 and 10 months and I have become expert in changing diapers -de goeie oude doeken- giving bottles and pap, changing there cloths -which is very challenging as they wear like so many layers, never ending. Like the picture of Eric in his yellow out-fit he looks like a puffy chicken. The orphanage is really well equiped, clean and organized. They have different blocks for different ages, have their own agricultural field were children can grow things, bakery to learn this very important art, guinea pig farm, footbal field,...
With the babies they do have some strange policies, we are normally not allowed to hold them -as they could get attached to us and they put the baby bottles in the beds that way that the children could-should drink themselves which I do think ideal for such small creatures, even dangerous. Anyhow I was informed of these rules by my finish friends but pretended not to know on arrival and they more or less let me do my thing.
The direction changed last week and apprently this is a good thing as this lady is more modern and open minded for changes. (direction apparently is linked to political parties,...)
Suvi and Salla told me that they were even allowed to take Jorge and Evita -both 10 months- out of their bed to play on a matress which is a big progress.
The children can be placed her for different reasons, their parents left them, they come from a difficult living situation -abuse ect- or they can be placed temporally during for instance a difficult divorce.
This week I am not in Coto Coto as I wanted Ladriella to be open for full days. (due to lack of volunteers it was closed the morning the last two weeks) So for the moment I go there by myself which is ok as it is always less busy in the morning and a lot of children don't realize it is open yet. I hope by the time they due I will be reinforced by some volunteers. There are lots arriving this weekend -a family with two children, who are more coming for observation I think, they are only staying for two weeks, and two others.
Patty and Juan Jose said they will make a schedule so that everybody will go to Ladriella and Coto Coto.

As I am struggling with posting my jungle videos I decided to first give you an up-date of my day to day life. Last week was my last with Pierce and Alex.
It was a nice week with some great activities for the kids. We started up a pen-palls system with children in England -hope to have some letters back once Pierce and Alex are in England-, did junk band -STOMP idea of using everything as instruments, discovered that their rhythm needs a lot of work-, and ended the week with a treasure hunt.

Because we told them there would be a fiesta -farewell for Alex and Pierce- ladriella was packed friday afternoon, almost 50 children. Pierce stayed with the small kids and Alex was trapped by a dog when he went to get the camera so I ended up doing the trip by myself and 35 children.
Challenging but fun.
In the evening we had a farewell dinner in a restaurant specialized in cow hart and look-a-like donuts (more my thing).
Cullinair up-date of last week, the chaps ate cow hart and guinea pig, I learned to make pisco sour (is now my favourite cocktail) with wich I ate raw green beens -finish snack-.

The lads are now in Cusco and have rented a motorbike to go to Matchu Pitchu -probably the start of motorcycle diaries 2-

After a very quiet, relaxing weekend my finish roomies Suvi and Salla are now joining me to Ladriella. They both come from the hart -capital- of Lapland home of santa (apparently he really has a house their and loads of tourist come to visit him).
Tomorrow I will go to the orphanage with them for a few days to see what it is like. They will keep going to the orphanage as it is for their internship for school. Saturday a new volunteer should come to assist me in the future with Ladriella.

The picutures you see today are from our bingo -with pictures- and memory game. Both in an attempt to learn english names.

Tomorrow we go to the center to buy batteries for the music installation, also a good excuse to go to the cake shop, it has become a weekly ritual.

For the moment the weather is strange here, even more -wisselvallig- as in belgium, one minute you are sweating like crazy the next it s cold and windy. But in general the Peruvians -especially the older generation- always dress up like it s winter. Layers of wollen clooths when we are -puffen- in our t shirt. Patty told me it is because they believe that cold makes you sick. For instance you can't give children cold water, it will make them sick. Well it is perception propably because what they think is cold is a summer day in belgium. (Salla told me that an african friend said their green winter was bearable when he was he was talking about their summer...)

For some -unfortunate- under you the alarm clock will almost go 6h24. I am going to the land of the dreaming and hope to meet you soon in the virtual world.

As you will read this should have been posted Thursday but the internet broke down. I have just gotten back from the jungle and it is my turn to have a break
down of my stomach. This is why I am not in Ladriella this morning. The jungle was amazing. Very "a l improviste" which made it surprising and adventurous. Will give you an up-date on this soon. If it works out I will have some film (the dancing with the tribes could be send in for funniest home videos, the waterfalls, the walk threw the river, coming up soon in part three of -Peru het leven zoals het is-) to show.

Buonas Dias and a super weekend for all!!!

3 hours ago we -or better the chaps- decided to go threw with the jungle plan. It took forever to -knoop door te hakken- as they are short on cash and they both dropped ill this week. But now it is certain that we are going but this is the only thing sure. For the moment nothing else is planned. Tomorrow at eight Juan Jose will give us a short briefing on transportation, guides ect. We can stay in the volunteer house which is cheap - the mission is to keep this as budget friendly as possible- and nice to get to know these people and their project.

So it was our last day in the Ladriella project this week. The project offers the children of the brick baking community the chance to engage in educational -mainly english-, artistic and sportive activities. It s a great initiative but not easy as boys and girls between 5-12 can come and often they bring their younger brothers and sisters. This means you can be walking around with a one year old while you are trying to stimulate other children in engaging in the planned activities. Also you don't know who is coming because they all go to school at different times and also need to work sometimes.
(When they start baking the stones it needs to burn non stop for 48 hours so somebody always needs to be present.)

But the kick off has been lots of fun, most children are very spontaneous, loving and once you motivate them to do something very enthuasiastic. They are also incredibly strong, we have already had nose bleeds, heads knocked against the floor but hardly any tears. Even the smallest are played with like dolls -on the toy car, on the cupboard, pulled around on mattresses and hardly give a scream (I am a lot more worried about it then they are)
I already helped with the first homework of children which was fun but challenging. The solar system in general isn't my cup of tea but in spanish,...
Started Spanish course so I hope this will pay of real soon.

Survivied my first dog attack pretty well, turned-started barking myself which scared him of enough. Did carry a rock in my pocket the rest of the way. Alex and me free styled to the center in our mission to find kite material and also important chocolate cake (this is one address that I won't forget,...)

We were also treated to the sauna this Monday as the showers hadn't worked that long. As a lot of Peruvian buildings it missed some parts, window on the last floor and closing doors towards the roof. Smelling fire I decided to take a look and discovered a camp fire underneath the water pipes. The essence was also still authentic having a half bush of eucalyptus stuck in the boiling water.

Ended the evening with Pierce as half of the house had a stomach infection. Decided to be a little adventurous and ordered a dish that I had never heard from with chicken. Decided this is my last chicken adventure for a while as it turned out to be either chicken nek -more pezen then meat- or chicken insides, neither of them sound realy appealing to me.

Hyuncayo; dag 2; vanuit mijn bedje met zicht op de bergen (wij worden volledig omringd door bergen, prachtig)

Het begint hier al donder en koud te worden hoewel het maar kwart na zes is. Bij jullie is het al
kwart na een dus vermoedelijk allemaal onder de wol voor de kick of van de week. Maar jullie
hebben blijkbaar kunnen genieten vd nazomer die hopelijk lang gaat duren.

K weet eigenlijk niet goed waar eerst te beginnen, zoveel eerste indrukken; culturele curiositeiten; mini avontuurtjes.

Na het vliegtuig dacht ik dat ik het ergste achter de rug had tot ik minden in het lima verkeer zat. Leuze; optimaal toeter gebruiken -liefste zonder reden-; rijstroken negeren en liefst zo dicht mgl tegen elkaar rijden slalom gewijs. Wonder dat er niet elke 5 seconde een ongeluk gebeurt. Na een nachtje Lima de bus naar Hyuncayo gemist, echt niet mijn schuld deze keer; mss heb ik wel een slechte invloed op de mensen. -hoewel hun manana attitude zit er mss ook wel voor iets tussen-

Busrit was intens; k zat vanvoor, groot raam overal prachtige natuur en ook ravijnen maar naar hun normen reden ze voorbeeldig. Tot 5000 meter hoog dus behoorlijk stevig -al bij al goed overleefd, slechts lichamelijke crash van goed half uur-

Aankomst verwelkomd door Patty en Jose die de organisatie leiden; hun kinderen Juan Jose -de helf van de mannelijke populatie noemt-heet (schrappen wat niet past) zo en een kwart van de vrouwen Patty, originaliteit troef en dochter Calilea en Mercedes -all around opas- en 3 engelse chaps who where dying to meet me blijkbaar. De pc van de organisatie had namelijk een break-down gehad en al mijn info was gewist, ze hadden dus al serieus zitten speculeren naar mijn natioliteit, leeftijd,...
Grappig; echt wel toffe gasten

Gisteren dan met hen en P&J op stap naar prachtige uitzichten, ruines -van hun vrouders,naam vergeten- en een meer waar we zijn gaan bootje varen en waar we heerlijke vis konden eten.
S avonds afscheid etentje want Nick vertrekt morgen terug naar Londen. Avond afgesloten met Pisco Sour en live peruviaans cover bandje.

Huncayo blijkt echt wel een grote stad te zijn dus verloren lopen zit er dik in hoewel iedereen mij hier in geuren en kleuren probeert weg te maken (en wss echt niet kunnen inbeelden hoe slecht ik er wel in ben). Kaarten hebben ze hier niet echt, geen toeristische stad , wij worden hier dan ook gringo s genoemd -hoewel het niet slecht bedoeld is- mensen zijn echt vriendelijk. Het huis hier ligt 20 minuten lopen van het stadcentrum (voor mij vermoedelijk 40). We liggen in een deel waar de straten uit stenen en zand en heel veel putten bestaan. Maar dat stopt geen auto, ze wanen zich allemaal 4 maal 4 s hoewel het vaak extreem gammele bakken zijn. De meeste verplaatsingen lijken -op mijn 2 daagse ervaringen gebasseerd- hier met taxis en mini busjes te zijn. Het laatste is echt een zot systeem. Ze rijden heel den tijd een traject en een jonge gast hangt uit het busje en probeert mensen erin te lokken. The more the merrier, stappelen langs alle kanten.

Momenteel slaap ik alleen wat wel fijn is om te acclimatiseren, vrijdag komen er twee meisjes bij, wie wat hoe zal dus vrijdag bij een live ontmoeting blijken.
Uiteindelijk ga ik morgen niet in een weeshuis maar in een dagopvang werken voor kinderen van
een steenbakkerij. Ze komen hiernaartoe als ze niet op school zitten -maar enkele uren per dag- of mee moeten helpen. Dit project blijkt volledig op vrijwilligers te draaien en vermits Pierce en Alex dit momenteel doen leek me dit wel fijn -ze blijven nog twee weken-.

Hopelijk heb ik jullie nog niet verloren want ik vermoed dat het een behoorlijk chaotisch verslag is maar ja ik borrel momenteel echt.

Tot slot nog enkele hyuncayose (ofzo) wijsheden

- Hard blaffende honden bijten hard. Hou steeds steen en geladen handtas in aanslag aldus mijn gebeten chaps die gelukkig enkel een deel van hun broek verloren.
(hplk moet ik dit nooit uit eigen ervaring schrijven)

-Warme dousche kunnen u hier doen rillen van plezier bij het krijgen van mini electrische
schoks. Het systeem boezemt mij alleszins geen vertrouwen in maar eigenlijk moet ik er mij
nog geen zorgen over maken. Door algemeen gebrek aan druk op het water is er momenteel geen sprake van douschen.
Er blijkt een gym te zijn die ik deze week is gaan checken zo heb ik twee vliegen in een klap (geen
honden tijdens een mgl jog en schokvrije dousche)

- Er bestaat hier geen winter en zomer maar droog en nat seizoen. Momenteel droog en lekker zonnig overdag, koud s morgens en s avonds

- Elke maaltijd bevat rijst en patatten maar zeg geen patat tegen een patat want er bestaan er 500 ofzo hier.

- Mijn vegetarisme stierf hier een stille dood of mss een lange pauze want ze smijten hier met pollo naar u kop. De eerste dag alleen kreeg ik het in drie varianten en gisteren werd de helft van mijn bord door kip ingepalmd. Pollo passeert wel maar gevulde varkens, cavias ect laat ik toch aan mij passeren.

Uit bovenstaand twee punten heb ik besloten toch voor mezelf te koken want groenten zijn hier eerder een decoratief element.

- We liggen op 2 uur van een gletsjer en 3 uur van de jungle en 7 van de zee.
